History of MZ

MZ began in 1906 when Rasmussen purchased a textile factory in Zschopau, starting with bicycle engines. In 1917, he introduced the steam-powered DKW vehicle. By 1923, the company was renamed DKW, and in 1929, it became the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, producing 60,000 bikes. Post-WWII, the factory was nationalized under IFA in East Germany. In 1956, the MZ brand was born. In the 1960s, MZ’s two-stroke engines, developed by Walter Kaaden, were nearly unbeatable, but racer Ernst Degner’s defection to Suzuki with Kaaden’s expansion chamber secrets cost them the 1961 125 cc championship. By 2008, production ceased due to financial losses, and in 2013, the company was declared insolvent. Today, MZ produces only the Charlie electric scooter.
