Brammo

Brammo: Pioneering Electric Motorcycles from America

Brammo was an American innovator in the electric motorcycle industry, founded in 2002 by Craig Bramscher in Talent, Oregon. Initially starting as a project in Bramscher’s garage to design supercars for taller individuals, the company later shifted its focus to electric motorcycles, becoming a key player in sustainable transportation.

In 2008, the company rebranded as Brammo, Inc., dedicating itself entirely to electric vehicles. The launch of the Enertia in 2009 marked a significant milestone, as it became one of the first electric motorcycles sold through Best Buy stores across the United States, making electric biking more accessible to the masses.

The Enertia was powered by a lithium iron phosphate battery, offering a top speed of over 62 mph (100 km/h) and a range of up to 42 miles (67 km) on a single charge. Designed for urban commuting, it quickly became a favorite among eco-conscious riders looking for an efficient alternative to gas-powered bikes.

In 2010, Brammo introduced the Empulse lineup, featuring three models (6.0, 8.0, and 10.0) with ranges between 60 to 100 miles and a top speed exceeding 100 mph. This series was groundbreaking as it included a six-speed transmission, a first for electric motorcycles, enhancing both performance and rider engagement.

Brammo didn’t stop at production; it also made its mark in racing. In 2009, the company participated in the Time Trial Xtreme Grand Prix (TTXGP) on the Isle of Man, the world’s first zero-emission superbike race. Brammo’s TTR model secured third place, achieving a top speed of 102 mph (164 km/h).

In 2015, Polaris Industries acquired Brammo’s entire electric motorcycle division. Polaris began producing a rebranded electric bike, the Victory Empulse, at its Spirit Lake, Iowa facility, signaling a new chapter for Brammo’s technology in the broader market.

Later, in October 2017, Cummins acquired Brammo’s remaining assets, effectively ending its run as an independent brand. However, Brammo’s innovations continue to influence the electric vehicle industry, with its technology still in use in various modern EVs.

Brammo motorcycles were known for their lightweight design, utilizing extruded aluminum frames instead of carbon fiber to balance durability and weight. The company also prioritized sustainability by incorporating recycled materials into many of its components.

One of the standout features of the Empulse was its liquid-cooling system, a first in electric motorcycles. This system improved motor efficiency and performance, making the bike suitable for longer, more intense rides.
